Visit 13th Colony THEN Tour South Georgia
May 4, 2026

Looking for a memorable Georgia distillery visit? Just two hours south of Atlanta, 13th Colony Distilleries in Americus offers tours, tastings and hands-on whiskey experiences in the heart of South Georgia.
But the trip is more than just a distillery stop. Americus and the surrounding area are filled with historic sites, unique local shops and Southern charm that make it perfect for a day trip or weekend getaway.
Tour and Taste at 13th Colony Distilleries
Visit 13th Colony to see where the spirits are aged. Guests can step inside the working distillery to learn how award‑winning bourbons and whiskeys are crafted, aged and bottled.
During a guided distillery tour, you’ll learn how South Georgia’s climate, with its natural heat cycles and humidity, helps shape the flavor of every barrel.
Visitors can also enjoy guided tastings featuring the distillery’s lineup of bourbons, whiskeys and other spirits. The Tasting Room offers a relaxed place to experience pours that reflect the distillery’s philosophy: spirits worth drinking slow.
On select days, guests can take part in special experiences like the Barrel Thief Tour and Tasting Experience, a private tour and tasting event that includes craft cocktails made with 13th Colony’s popular spirits; a flight of 13th Colony’s Southern Bourbon, Southern Rye Whiskey, Southern Vodka and Southern Gin; and samples of Cask Strength Bourbon Whiskey and Cask Strength Rye Whiskey directly from the barrel. In the Bottle Your Own experience, guests step into the rickhouse where they sample two cask-strength Single Barrels then personally fill, cork, and hand-label their very own bottle of 13th Colony Single Barrel Bourbon or Rye Whiskey. Participants in Barrel Thief and Bottle Your Own experiences also go home with a 13th Colony Rocks glass.
Visitors can find tour details and schedule experiences on the distillery’s Tours & Tastings page.
Stay at the Historic Windsor Hotel in Downtown Americus
If you’re turning your distillery visit into a weekend getaway, consider staying at the Historic Windsor Hotel.
Built in 1892, this beautifully restored Victorian landmark sits in the heart of downtown Americus. The hotel offers historic architecture, comfortable rooms and easy walking access to shops and restaurants.
Its iconic tower and elegant design make it one of the most recognizable buildings in South Georgia and a memorable place to stay after a day exploring the distillery.
Shop Local at the Made in Americus Store
Across the street from the Windsor Hotel and just a few blocks away from the distillery is the Made in Americus store.
This locally focused shop celebrates the creativity and craftsmanship of South Georgia makers. Inside you’ll find handmade goods, regional foods, locally crafted gifts and unique items that reflect the character of the area – including 13th Colony whiskeys, bourbon, vodka and gin.
It’s the perfect place to pick up something memorable from your visit.
Visit the Jimmy Carter House and Gardens
Just a short drive from Americus is Plains, Georgia, home to the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park.
Visitors can explore the childhood home of President Jimmy Carter, walk through historic Plains High School – now the site’s visitor center – and learn about the early life of the 39th President of the United States.
The surrounding gardens and preserved sites offer a peaceful and fascinating look into Georgia’s history.
Explore Andersonville National Historic Site
History enthusiasts should also visit the nearby Andersonville National Historic Site.
This important Civil War site preserves the grounds of the Andersonville prison and honors prisoners of war from all American conflicts.
The site includes the National POW Museum and the Andersonville National Cemetery, creating a powerful and meaningful place to reflect on American history.
Hike Georgia’s “Little Grand Canyon”
Providence Canyon is one of Georgia’s most surprising landscapes. Located about 45 miles west of Americus in Lumpkin, Georgia, the canyon offers sweeping views and trail hikes. The canyon’s orange, pink and purple gullies – some up to 150-feet deep – were formed by erosion in the 1800s, and its cliffs and ravines feel worlds away from the surrounding pine forests.
With camping, cottages and picnic sites, Georgia’s “Little Grand Canyon” is a convenient and memorable outdoor stop in Southwest Georgia
A South Georgia Destination Worth the Trip
Americus may be a small town, but it offers something many destinations don’t — space to slow down and savor the experience.
Start your visit with a tour and tasting at 13th Colony Distilleries. Then explore the history, shops and landmarks that make this corner of South Georgia special.
Whether you’re visiting from Atlanta or traveling from farther away, it’s a trip that pairs perfectly with a great pour of bourbon or whiskey.
And when you raise a glass at 13th Colony, you’ll be tasting a spirit shaped by the very place you’re visiting.
